Catalogue Note
The composition of the upper half, with Christ and the four figures lowering him from the cross, is derived (in reverse) from an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi of c. 1515-16, itself after Raphael's drawing of 1506-07 for the Borghese Depostion (see G.B. Pezzini et al., Raphael Invenit, Rome 1985, p. 168, reproduced p. 670).
