Description
- Head of a philosopher
- inscribed on the reverse of the old relining: GR
and on the stretcher in an 18th-century (?) hand: Salvatore Pittore Rosa Autore - oil on canvas, unframed
Condition
The canvas has an old relining.
There are losses to the original canvas in the upper left hand corner and in a stretch of approximately 3cm. to the lower right hand margin.
Paint surface is in good condition, with the brushwork well-preserved, though dirty and under an old varnish.
The surface is uneven and the stretcher has marked the surface 5 cm. in from the upper and right hand margin. There is an old restored damage to the canvas lower left measuring approximately 7 by 4cm. visible in raking light.
Inspection under UV light reveals the aforementioned retouchings as well as retouchings to the lower right hand corner, along the right hand margin and to the upper and lower left hand corners, as well as scattered throughout the painting. There are just a few scattered spot retouchings to the philosopher's face.
Offered unframed.
