Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has not been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There are no obvious tears or damage however it is evident upon close inspection, that the canvas was extended approx. 12 in. by the artist. There is an even layer of craquelure overall to the varnish and some areas where the varnish has slightly deteriorated and would be improved by being removed and reapplied. There is minor abrasion visible at the extreme canvas edges, along the lower edges in particular. There are some very minor scattered flecks of what appears to be household paint. ULTRAVIOLET Due to a thinky and cloudy varnish, examination under Ultraviolet light does not reveal any recent restoration. Catalogue Note

This dramatic scene depicts the moment in Act IV of Shakespear's Julius Caesar with Brutus in his tent the night before the crucial battle at Philippi. Brutus, having quarelled with Cassius, weary and anxious of coming events in the morning, requests a little music from Lucius, his page. When the boy falls asleep the ghost of Caesar appears before the startled Brutus and foretells that he will see him again on the field at Philippi.
