Condition

The painting has been fairly recently relined and restored and, for a canvas of its size, it is well preserved overall. The surface is in good overall condition, with most if not all of the original impasto beautifully preserved. There are numerous samll retouchings throughout but no major damages. There are a few minor restored damages, for example a small restored hole in the upper left to the left of the lip of the gilt jug, and another in the lower right to the left of the armour. The varnish is somewhat matt and the painting is offered in a later parcel gilt cassetta frame.

Catalogue Note

As a successful female artist at the court of Louis XIV, Madeleine de Boulogne was a greaꦗt rarity.  Her court patronage included a series of eight sumptuous still lifes for Apartments of the Duchess of Bourgogne, four of which are now in the King's rooms at Versailles, and a further royal commissi💯on for the Grand Apartments of the King at the Tuileries.  She submitted still lifes of the trophies of war to the Académie Royale in Paris in 1669 and 1673 and in 1669 both her and her elder sister Geneviève were admitted to the Académie, which was very unusual for female artists of the period.  Two of her brothers Bon de Boulogne and Louis de Boulogne the Younger were also artists.
