Description
- Claude-Joseph Vernet
- A shipwreck off a Mediterranean coastline with figures trying to salvage goods and bewailing their fate in the foreground
bears signature and date lower right: J.Vernet f Rome 1745
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas is relined. A fairly thick discoloured varnish is visible throughout the entire composition, rendering any older retouches underneath largely invisible. A couple small retouches are perceptible under UV: one underneath the small boat at far left; and another in the left most figure in the central figure group. A very small repaired tear in the canvas is located in the middle sky, just above the flag attached to the larger boat. Overall though, the picture presents a strong image and does not appear to have any major repairs or retouches. With a light clean and a new varnish the painting would freshen up nicely. In a carved gilt wood frame.
