Description
- Venice, a view of the fondamenta nuove and the ospedale dei mendicanti from the island of San Michele
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has been relined but is not too firm and the paint surface is not overly flattened by the relining.
The paint surface is in good condition with the impasto and detail of the work well-preserved. The paint is however a little dirty and under a glossy, uneven varnish.
No major damages are apparent to the work.
Inspection under UV light is impeded by the aforementioned varnish but does reveal extensive retouchings to the water and sky, with the boats and buildings bearing far fewer scattered spot retouchings and strengthenings.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition with a few minor losses.

Catalogue Note
This is a rare view from the lagoon of the Fondamenta Nuove and the Ospedale dei Mendicanti that had been founded in the fourteenth century.
