Chorister, by Lottery, out of a mare by Chorus, was bred in 1828 b🦩y William Vane, 1st Marquess and later 1st Duke of Cleveland. T💃rained by John Smith, he had a short racing career but won the 1831 St. Leger at Doncaster, ridden by John Day. The present painting was presumably commissioned to commemorate that victory.
