Description

  • Edward S. Curtis
  • THE SCOUT
  • gelatin silver print
warm-toned, numbered in the negative, signed in ink and blindstamped on the image, framed, 1900 (Taschen, p. 44)

Condition

This photograph, on matte-surface double-weight paper, is in generally excellent condition. The signature in ink on the image remains strong. The edges are lightly rubbed, and the corners are bumped. Upon very close examination, a small crease is visible in the upper right corner of the print. On the reverse of the print, there are rust-colored fingerprints from handling, as well as several small adhesive remnants, indicating that this print was previously on a mount. Also visible on the reverse are areas of brown discoloration, likely a result of a previous wood frame backing. The numbers '23693,' '12x16,' and '3' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse. This photograph is in a fine oak frame of the period. The frame remains in generally excellent condition.
