Catalogue Note

A similar pair of candelabra was made by Martin-Guillaume Biennais for the wedding of  Napoleon's brother, Jérôme Bonaparte to Katarina von Württemberg (see Christie's Geneva, 13 November 1995, lot 193). The Emperor was seduced by the refined quality of Biennais's silver and made him his official goldsmith. After this, Biennais was authorised to inscribe his works orfèvre de LL.MM impériales et royales et de LL. MM les rois de Hollande et  de Westphalie.
