Catalogue Note

The first fan was printed after late 18th century engravings by Peltro William Tomkins (1759-1840) illustrating the poem The Birth and Triumph of Love by Sir James Bland Burgess, 1823. Tomkins was drawing-master to the daughters of George III of England and executed these illustrations from designs by Princess Elizabeth and from paper cꦇut by Lady Templeton, lady-in-waiting to the royal princesses of England.

The second fan commemorates the wedding of Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen (1771-1847) and Princess Henriette Alexandrine of Nassau-Weilburg (1797-1829) in 1815. A happy marriage, they had seven children but Princess Henrietta died young of scralet fever in 1829 which left the Archduke in greꩵat sorrow.
