Description
- gold, enamel, ivory
- Diameter 8.3cm, 3 1/4 in
circular, the lid inset with a miniature of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and Sicily, wearing orders, the frame and lemon-gold border chased with roses and oak in English taste, the ground enamelled in blue over flinqué ribbons, the borders in blue, black and white taille d'épargne enamelling

Condition
Enamel on sides has been tactfully restored. Small dent visible in lid lining. Miniature has mildew spots on ground and uniform. It is probable that the box was adapted in England shortly after it was made and the chased border added to replace what would have been a jewelled outer border.

Catalogue Note
Ferdinand IV (1751-1825) was married in 1768 to Archduchess Maria Carolina of Austria. From 1816, he was styled Ferdinand I, King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In this portrait, he is shown wearing the star and sash of the Neapolitan Order of St. Januarius, the sash and starof the Order of Charles III of Spain, and the stars of the French Order of the Saint Esprit, the Order of St Ferdinand of Merit (established by himself in 1800) and the Papal Order of the Golden Spur.
