Description

  • silver, gilding, palisander, chalcedony
  • height 6.4cm, 2 1/2 in.
in neoclassical taste, the dome bell with pink chalcedony pushpiece within a chased rosette, above a stepped circular palisander base applied with two-colour gilt ribbon and laurel swags within bound reed and leaf tip borders, damaged; struck with workmaster's initials, 88 standard, scratched inventory number 14700

Condition

The bell was suspended above the wood base by three internal supports which emanate from the base mount below to the top of the inside near the pushpiece. These supports have broken, two at the top and one at the mount below. The clapper functioned by means of a spring, which is present but not functioning. Returning the bell to proper working order would entail the re-soldering of the supports and re-attachment of the spring. Three of the pins attaching the ribbon and laurel swags to the side of the base have been replaced. Two of the pins attaching the bound reed mount to the lower base are lacking.
