Description
- ivory, gold, steel, gems, silver, enamel, etc.
forming a ruler, each end enclosing three pencils or implements, 22.5cm, 8 7/8 in; a double-ended blue and red enamel and silver gaming pencil applied with the short arms of the Archduchy of Austria, G. A. Scheid, Vienna, circa 1900, 22cm, 8in; a gold match box cover set with 1 Austrian heller dated 1902, with inscription, J.H. Werner, Berlin, 4.5cm, 1 3/4 in; a tortoiseshell and suede card case with gilt and red cross enamelled mounts, probably Vienna, 8.5cm, 3 3/8in; and two portrait miniatures of small boys, the first by Friedrich Wailand, signed, circa 1860, the second circa 1840
Provenance
The pencil was a gift from Archduke Frederick, Duke of Teschen;
the gold match box cover is inscribed: Es ist doch kein Italiener. It is thought that it was a present from Elias, Duke of Parma, to his fiancée Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria (whom he married in 1903), and is a jocular allusion to his Italian name but Austrian upbringing.

Condition
1st: light rusting in exterior of steel; two cabochons lacking
2nd: blue enamel scraped on one side, deep dent in cover
3rd: red enamel with small scrape near dull patch on shell
4th: miniatures OK, velvet on one frame worn
