Catalogue Note
Following negotiations between France and the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, Princess Marie-Caroline of Naples and Sicily was married to King Louis XVIII's nephew Charles Ferdinand Duc de Berry. The wedding took place on 17 June 1816 in Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. The interior was decorated for this occasion by François-Joseph Bélanger, architect to the King. The arcades of the chancel were converted into stands and covered with crimson taffeta scattered with fleur-de-lys, the arms of France and fourteen medallions painted in gold depicting the reign of Louis XVIII. A bronze plaque with the same conjoined arms, used for the ceremonial coach, is illustrated in the catalogue exhibition Entre Cour et Jardin, Marie-Caroline, Duchesse de Berry, Sceaux 2007.
