Catalogue Note
This biscuit bust of the duchesse de Berry, sculpted by Jean Charles Nicolas Brachard fils aîné, is a reduced version of the official portrait bust by the sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio (1769-1845). Several examples were produced by the Sèvres factory between 1816 and around 1825. One, dated September 1820, is kept in the collection of the author François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), fervent supporter of the duchess; see the exhibition catalogue Entre Cour et Jardin, Marie-Caroline, Duchesse de Berry, Sceaux, 2007, fig. 13.
The archives of the manufactory record that Brachard aîné also scu🐭lpted in 1821 the bust of Louise d'Artois and her brother the Duc de Bordeaux. The busts offered here are dated in the same year as the creation of the original sculptures and would appear to be the earliest examples known. The inscriptions on♍ the bust of the Duc de Bordeaux indicate that the two Brachard brothers, Jean Charles Nicholas, fils aîné, and Alexandre, fils jeune, collaborated in its creation.
