Catalogue Note

The Duc and Duchesse de Berry moved to the Château de Rosny in 1818, appreciating the escape from the formality of the Tuileries court. On St Charles' day (4 November) in 1820 the year of the Duc's assassination, the Duchesse established the Hospice Saint-Charles. One part of it was designated to serve as hospice, another as orphanage and the central pavilion contained the heart of her husband.

The work is one of several commissio𝕴ns by the Duchesse from her drawing tutor, Felice Marie Ferdinand Storelli. Storelli was well known among the royal courts of Europe, and his works were also acquired by the Duc d'Orléans and King Charles Albert of Sardinia. He received a first class medal at the Paris Salon in 1825.
