Description

  • René-Antoine Houasse
  • An Equestrian Portrait of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre (1638-1715)
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is in good condition, if a little thin in passages of the sky, and retains some impasto in the dress of the sitter. It is dirty and under a yellowed varnish. No damages are apparent to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light, which is rather impeded by the thick varnish over the work, reveals some strengthening work to the sitter and his horse, and to the ground below them. It further reveals scattered retouchings in the sky and background, and perhaps some more extensive older retouchings to the sky upper left which are well-masked by the varnish. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition with a few minor losses. Sold together with Crucifixion, After Rubens: The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is dirty and abraded, under an old varnish. There are a number of specks of paint loss, especially around the top of the cross. Inspection under UV light reveals some extensive retouchings along the margins of the painting, and extensive retouchings to the background and scattered across Christ and the cross. Offered in a gilt wood frame in poor condition.
