Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is some retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably along three repaired tears horizontally from the left edge, respectively at eye level, chest level, and one slightly larger area near the lower edge. There is some light surface dirt. Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

This is the only known portrait of Johann Wilhelm Friedrich Freiherr von Hompesch (1761 - 1809). The son of a civil servant, in 1806 he became Finance Minister to the Kingdom of Bavaria and acquired in 1808 Castle Neuberghausen in Munich, serving briefly as leader of Bavaria during the 1809 Austrian invasion. He is here depicted wearing the robes of the Royal Bavarian Order of St Hubert, which he was awarded in 1806. On the spine of his book is inscribed Finance / de la Bavière / 1806-1809.
