Description
- Georg Philipp Rugendas I
- Battles Scenes between Christians and Turks at the raising of a siege
- a pair, both oil on canvas, unlined
Condition
Both canvases are unlined.
Their paint surfaces are very dirty and are under yellowed varnish. Some of the paint is abraded, particularly in the darker tones of the paintings but the brighter colours retain some vibrancy. Both paintings have minor areas of paint loss and show a tendency to lifting in the upper half of their compositions. There are surface scuffs and stains on both works, though no major damages are apparent.
Inspection under UV light is obstructed by the varnish. However, it does suggest some old retouching work and strengthenings to both paintings. This is far more extensive in the scene with the ladders which has considerable retouchings to the sky and around the margins of the painting.
Both paintings are offered in gilt wood slip frames in poor condition.
