Description
- Johann Philipp von der Schlichten
- Equestrian portrait of Commander Johann Kaspar Freiherr von Hillesheim (1679-1761), in front of a battle
- signed lower centre: Von der Schlichten
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The signed paint surface is clean and secure and under a glossy varnish. There is evidence of abrasion in the brown tones of the sky and the black used in the Commander's uniform.
An old restored vertical tear or canvas join is visible a fifth of the way in from the right hand side. A similar old, restored tear or canvas join extends horizontally, 10cm. up from the bottom of the aforementioned line, out to the right hand margin of the canvas. A small, old restored damage of approximately 3cm by 2cm. can be made out close to the upper margin of the work, just above the Commander's head. No other damages are visible to the naked eye.
Inspection under UV light is somewhat restricted by the varnish. However, it does confirm the retouchings to the aforementioned damages as well some retouchings to the right hand and upper margin of the painting, presumably in response to some old frame abrasion. A few further small areas of retouching are revealed but the battle scene and this sitter remain largely untouched, with just a few spot retouchings visible under UV light.
Offered in a gilt wood frame with a few minor losses.
