Description

  • Bernardo Strozzi
  • Saint Francis of Assisi
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old relining. The detail of the painting is well preserved, though the paint surface is rather dirty and a little abraded in parts. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye. There is an area of pronounced craquelure in the upper right, which is beginning to show signs of lifting. There are a number of small white specks, possibly paint, across the surface of the painting, which could be removed with a light surface clean. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the varnish covering the paint surface. However, it does reveal some fairly extensive retouchings to the background of the painting, particularly in the aforementioned aread of craquelure and discontinuously along a vertical line (possibly an old canvas join) running the full length of the canvas about 7cm. in from the right hand side. St. Francis remains largely original, with fairly extensive but scattered small spot retouchings. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fairly good condition, with a few minor losses and cracks.
