Catalogue Note

The figure was inspired by an engraving by François Jouillain, after Callot, titled Pantalon Ancien, illustrated by L. Riccoboni, Histoire du Théâtre Italien, Paris 1728, pl. 38. This figure derived from Kändler's 1741 remodelled version of a group of Pantalone and an actress, see M. Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, p.187,'Ein Croppgen den Pantaleon vorstellend nebst seinen bey sich habenden Frauen Zimmer Völlig erneueret solches auf sauberste ausspoussiret und aufs neue brauchbar gemacht...', see Kaendler's Arbeitsberichte, July 1741, p. 80.
