Condition

Original canvas. There are no traces of retouching visible under ultraviolet light. There is some fine craquelure in the lighter pigments in the the lower part, and some pinhole-sized spots of paint loss near the lower right edge. This work is in good condition and is ready to hang. Held in an elaborate gold and plaster frame with foliate motifs.

Catalogue Note

Inspired by Humboldt, Albert Berg travelled to South America and concentrated on studying the vegetation of New Granada (Colombia) and he published a folio of fourteen lithographs (Physiognomie der tropischen Vegetation Sd-America's; dargestellt durch eine Reihe von Ansichten aus der Urwäldern am Magdalenenstrome und der Anden von Neu-Granada) in 1854.

The work is inscribed on the stretcher 'Andes de Quindiu Nueva Granada Süd America / 4 Gr nörd. Br. 8000 Fuss Meereshöhe', with the artist's address, and with the names of plan꧙ts: 'Cupuliferen. Ceroxylon. Andicola. Oreadoxa frigida. Heliconien. Solaneen. Aroideen. Orchideen. Bromeli'
