The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is somewhat flat, and there is abrasion apparent in the darker tones of the painting, particularly in the beard of St. John and in the executioner's armour. Otherwise the paint surface is secure and in good condition, with a fine craquelure running throughout and under an old varnish. A number of old, restored damages to the painting are visible in raking light, most notably an area of approximately 10cm2 upper left and an old vertical tear, or possible canvas join running the majority of the length of the canvas approximately 15cm. in from the left hand margin. These have all been restored effectively though some retouchings have become discoloured. Inspection under UV light confirms extensive retouchings to the background and drapery, to the executioner's arm and older retouchings to the faces of the depicted. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition though rubbed.
