Description
- Giovanni Paolo Panini
- Figures conversing among Roman ruins
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface is secure and in good condition, under a slightly yellowed varnish. There are three patches of staining to the surface of the painting to the right of the right hand statue (as visible in the catalogue illustration).
A fairly small old, retouched tear is visible in the sky to the right of the top of Trajan's Column. These retouchings are confirmed by inspection under UV light which further reveals some extensive, though scattered, retouchings and strengthenings to the ruins to the left of the paintings, the rocks in the foreground, the figures and the pedestal to the right of the painting. There is also some infilling of the craquelure in the sky highlighted.
Offered in an ornate gilt wood and plaster frame in fairly good condition.
