flat chased, engraved and embossed with flowers and leaves, the cover inset with a gold plaque embossed with flowers, the underside engraved with arabic inscriptions
Condition
overall slightly worn conditin, the gold plaque missing a nut.

The betel is the leaf of a vine that grows in South East Asia. Since ancient times, it has been chewed for its medicinal properties. The leaf could also be filled with some tobacco, hence the use of a betel box: the main box would keep the betel leaves while the smaller chained one would be🧔 filled with some tobacc𒁃o.
