Description

  • wood, antler, ivory, silver, bronze
  • cartouche box: 19cm, 7 1/2 in wide
with later wooden body probably for the use of a cigarette case, leather cover applied with the cypher of Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria (1821–1912), together with a silver mounted antler engraved with a hunting scene, apparently unmarked, 19th century ; and a commemorative bronze coin for the birth of the Duc de Bordeaux, 29th September 1820

Condition

Cartouche box: some minor scratches commensurate with age, some holes in leather cover neabry the silver mounts and cipher. antler : silver mounts reglued, two small natural holes nearby the hunter and right hand side.

Catalogue Note

The bronze medal was issued by public subscription (on the initiative of the poet Chateaubriand) to celebrate the birth of the Duc de Bordeaux, l'enfant du miracle, born seven months after his father, the Duc de Berry's assassination in May 1819. The observe shows the duchess holding her newborn son, with her late husband's bust in the right background.  The legend "Dieu nous l'a donné, nos coeurs et n🔥os bras sont à lui."  The reverse shows St. Michael de🐭feating the devil, and the birth-date (feast of St. Michael) 29 Sept. 1820.
