Description

  • Leather, cardboard, silk, ivory and metal
constructed in three sections, the head joint, main body and lower bell joint attached by a screw thread, with five bands of ornamental turnery, the underside of the bell carved with a petal motif, the keys of gold with scallop shell touchpieces, four with circular covers and one, the low c sharp key, with a square cover, all engraved with a floral motif, the flea hole for the left thumb and the low c fingerhole with gold bushings Inscribed on an oval gold plaque on the head joint C. Wanscheid, St. Petersburg surmounted by the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle Length 13 1/2 in.; 34.3cm.
In red leather-bound case with brass fittings and silk interior, the lock escutcheon embossed with acorns (2)

Condition

In near perfect condition although curiously currently unwilling to play across its range. Probably in need of a good internal clean and re-padding. Seems happiest playing at approx. A=432Hz. but this may alter after cleaning. The case may be original but certainly appears to have been re-covered and re-lined. The lock escutcheon may be original but the small bosses on the lid are more questionable. The key looks original
