Catalogue Note
This rare icon depicting the elongated figure of St John as an ascetic with a bare chest and thin arms is based on the famous icon from the 1560's in the Moscow Kremlin. The iconographic type enjoyed a certain popularity at the time of Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) whose name saint was St John the Forerunner.
