against an elaborate architectural background, representing the city of Jerusalem, the crucified Christ depicted in the centre with closed eyes, his head strongly inclining to the left, flanked by the sun and the moon, on his left the Good Thief and on his right the Bad Thief, in the foreground two women comforting the Mother of God, Maria Magdalena holding the cross, St John the Evangelist looking up

Some loss of paint and some new ghesso along the border of the icon, some minor retouching

Catalogue Note
The variety in the postures, the supple fall of the folds, the architecture in the background and the tears running along the faces of the mourning figures, all give this icon an astonishingly Italian character, typical for the 17th and 18th century icon painting on the Ionian islands.
