Catalogue Note

This icon in all probability comes from a small chapel in the north of Russia (possibly the Arkhangelsk or Vologda region) where Deesis icons were often painted on a single horizontal panel. Alexander Svirsky (1448-1533)- founder of the Svirsky Monastery (1508), Zosima (d. 1478)- founder and first abbot of the Solovetsky Monastery and Savvatiy Solovetsk (d.1435) are particularly revered in the North.
