Catalogue Note

In the present work, George Inness depicts the lower Catskills region of New York, a locale he explored thoroughly and portrayed many times during this period. Michael Quick writes: "This is a fully developed composition, containing contrasting sections and numerous individual areas of incident and interest. The apparently calm scene is animated by the forceful action of light, which streams through the gate in the wall on the right and filters through the foliage there" (George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonné, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 2007, vol. 1, p. 315).
