Condition

The following condition report has been prepared by Yost Conservation, LLC: This painting was recently examined and was found to be in very good condition. The surface of the painting is coated with a thin layer of natural resin varnish and one small area of inpaint in the far left middle ground applied in the previous restoration dating from the mid-late 20th Century. A light surface film of soot and dirt has collected on this varnished surface since this last restoration giving the painting a dull dry appearance. Ultraviolet light examination of the painting reveals that the original varnish layer is still present underlying the restorers' varnish layer. The original varnish, a natural soft resin, has a pale green fluorescence that visually obscures much of the original pigment fluorescence. It is especially important that the original varnish be left intact on Inness paintings as the varnish is often cross-linked with the paint glazes. Structurally, the paint layer is in stable condition. A glue lining currently supports a network of fine aging cracks in the paint layer. Some slight impressing of the surface has occurred from the lining, but is not detrimental to the overall condition of the painting. The original stretcher has been replaced with a mechanical stretcher. This type of stretcher although not popular with purists is technically a very good support for the canvas. It is recommended that the lining be left intact on the existing stretcher although it would be acceptable to replace the mechanical stretcher with a traditional style wooden keyable stretcher. The surface of the painting could be lightly cleaned to remove the surface pollutants and a thin coating of varnish would liven and enhance the painting.
