Catalogue Note
The Newes was originally issued as a supplement to the The Public Intelligencer, published from 1663 by Sir Roger l'Estrange, the royalist pamphleteer who, as Surveyor of the Imprimery and Licenser of the Press, exposed unlicensed printers with such diligence that he became know as the "bloodhound of the press".
This edition contains the only known contemporary reference in English to the real d'Artagnan, here mentioned for his part, along with 100 musketeers, in the arrest and detention of Louis XIV's Minister of Finance Nicolas Fouquet.
