Provenance

Sale: Sotheby's, London, 25 November 1987, lot 232
Montgomery Gallery, San Francisco (purchased at the above sale)
Private Collection, USA
Acquired from the above by the present owner

Condition

Original canvas. There is a handful of minor retouchings visible under UV light, notably a thin stroke in the water (with some very minor associated spots of paint flaking nearby) and a couple of spots near the left edge around the centre. There are some small areas of craquelure, notably in the tree roots in the bank to the right. There is a c. 6 by 8cm patch over the reverse of the upper right, although there does not appear to be fluorescence over this area under ultra-violet on the surface and it does not appear to relate to damage. Overall this work is in good condition. Held in a gold-painted decorative wood and plaster frame.
