Condition
The canvas has been relined. There are no signs of retouching visible under UV light and an uneven varnish over the lower half. Apart from some spots of light surface dirt, overall this work is in good condition and is ready to hang.
Held in a wide, decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note
Executed circa 1869-18✅72, this is one of two known versions of the subje꧙ct by Fromentin. In the other, the white horse is without a saddle and some of the architectural details are changed.
