Condition

Unexamined out of the frame and under glass. The sheet is floating in the frame and does not appear to be laid down and appears to be attached at points to the backing board. The artist's pinholes are visible in all four corners. There are a few minor areas of surface rubbing to the extreme edges, probably relating to previous framing, notably to the left edge, upper centre, and lower edge, all visible in the catalogue illustration. Overall the work is in good original condition. Held in a decorative silver-painted frame, under glass.

Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1933, the present work relates to a series of sketches and a larger oil of the same subject (fig. 1) that Solana executed between 1933-43. 

The ritual Spanish celebration El entierro de la sardina (The Burial of the Sardine) is held at the end of winter on t🍷he last day of Carnival and the first day of Lent. Symbolising the casting away of the past in order to foster regeneration and renewal, the festival parade culminates with the ritual burning of a representation of a sardine. Francisco de Goya was one of the first painters to record the subject in the oil of the same title that he painted between♛ 1812-1819, now in the collection of the Real Academia de San Fernando, Madrid (fig. 2).
