Condition
The panel is overall flat and even, with very slight undulation along the upper and lower edges. Under ultraviolet light there is some minor retouching visible, notably a 3 by 2cm area near the right edge in the centre, a small spot behind the seated woman's neck and a minor retouched scratch in her left arm, a spot in the chest of the standing woman, and a thin horizontal line in the centre of the upper edge. A thick milky varnish makes the surface difficult to read under ultraviolet light and it is possible there is some further retouching which does not fluoresce. There is a very fine network of craquelure in the background, only visible on extremely close inspection. The colours are slightly brighter and more detailed in reality than in the catalogue illustration, which is quite dark.
Held in a gold-painted wood and plaster frame, with a fabric-lined outer liner.
