Catalogue Note
Developed in 2005 in conjunction with Harry Winston Rare Timepieces and the watchmaker Christophe Claret, the highly inventive Glissière tourbillon was winner of the coveted Grand Prꦑix d’Horologerie Technical Watch Category in 2007. The movement, Caliber CC-CHW97A features a skeletonized tourbillon with 51 hours power reserve wound by two platinum weights allowed to slide freely on metal rods. As the weights move independently back and forth they wind the mainspring via platinum fan-form gearing on the reverse. The design of movement and moving blocks draws comparisons to the wheels, sliding pistons and rails of a steam locomotive.
Originally under the guidance of Max Büsser (for a note on Max Busser see lot 2157) Harry Winston Rare Timepieces established the ‘Opus’ series of highly technical and exceptional wristwatches created annually in partnership with one of Switzerland’s most talented independent horologists. The Opus One, launched in 2001, was created in collaboration with watchmaker Francois Jean Paul Journe (see note on F.P.Journe, lot 2294) and subsequent examples from highly creative and successful master-watchmakers have included, among others, The ‘Opus 5’ by Felix Baumgartner (see note on Urwerk founders, lot 2153) and ‘Opus 6’ by Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey (see note 🍨on Greubel Forsey, page 106-107). Harry Winston, although most famous for their exquisite diamonds, has directly aided to the development of some of Switzerland’s most creative and successful independent watchmakers via Rare Timepieces and the Opus series.
