Catalogue Note

With a Certificate of Origin and an Extract from the Archives confirming sale on December 21st, 1998.  Accompanied by a fitted wood display box.

Favored for its sporty, elegant design, Ref. 5070 is the second largest wristwatch produced by Patek Philippe, with its diameter falling 0.8mm short of that of the Sky Moon.

Ref. 5070 also represented Patek Philippe's return to production of chronograph watches in 1998 after an almost 30-year break, and pieces in pink gold were introduced in 2003. The last chronograph model produced before this was Ref. 1463, for which production was halted in the late 1960s. The inspiration for the models was Ref. 2512, a split-second chronograph produced by Patek Philippe between 1950 and 1952. The case and dial designs are very much alike. For an example of Ref. 2512, see Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. 2, Second Edition, p. 274.

The model has since been discontinued, and the firm unveiled Ref. 5170 as its only gentleman's simple chronograph wristwatch at Baselworld in spring 2010.
