Condition

It is rare to find 5-minute repeating watches of this size, and the personalization of this piece is particularly interesting. The movement is running at the time of cataloguing and the watch is chiming in phase, however it may require service soon. The dial shows no visible hairline cracks and is in good condition. The minute hand has been replaced. The case is in good condition, though the engine turning is slightly rubbed.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. All dimensions in catalogue descriptions are approximate. Condition reports may not specify mechanical replacements or imperfections to the movement, case, dial, pendulum, separate base(s) or dome. Catalogue Note

With an Extract from the Archives confirming sale with 'HM Hutchinson' letter hour markers and sale on November 13th, 1880.

The present lot was originally given to Hayward Malcolm Hutchinson (1831-1883) in 1875.  Mr. Hutchinson resided in Washington, D.C. and was the esteemed manager of Alaska Commercial Co., a business that operated nearly all the general retail stores in Alaska.  This personalized pocket watch has been passed down through generations to the current owner.

Galt Bros. was established in Washington, D.C. in 1802 and was the area's oldest continuously running private business before closing its doors nearly two centuries later, in 2001. The store attracted the attention of the city's most important residents, with Abraham Lincoln counted among the store's clientele. By the late 19th century, Galt Bros. was one of Patek Philippe's largest retailers in the United States.
