Catalogue Note
The celebrated British artist Bridget Riley stated, “I love his children paintings. I think he has the same feeling as Rubens for children, that they are a source of light. They nearly always glow in his paintings. They radiate freshness and youth. They're like little butterflies or small flowers. They're so unbelievably delicate”' (Bridget Riley, quoted in Nicholas Wadley, ed., Renoir, A Retrospective, New York, 1987, p. 377).
Renoir was fascinated with painting children, especially his own, and as the present work was painted in 1895 it is highly likely that the infant depicted here is the artist’s second son, Jean Renoir, who was born one year earlier in 1894 and would later become one of the most celebrated and influential film directors of the early twentieth century.
