Condition
This work is in very good condition. The board is stable with some very slight undulation throughout. The corners of the board have been reinforced on the reverse and the edges are reinforced with tape. The surface is clean. There is a nail-head sized loss just to the left of the center of the upper left quadrant. Under UV light there is a small area of restoration at extreme lower left corner as well as hairline retouches in the thickest area of white pigment just below the reddish rectangle at center, to address prior pigment separation, otherwise fine.

Catalogue Note
"Bauer's paintings are music translated onto canvas. He was so influenced by the masters of classical music, Bach and Beethoven, that he understood the flow of rhythm, the dependency of one note on the previous one for its preparation and release and, in turn, that note's responsibility to the next and the resulting creation of a melodic line. This same principle can very effectively be applied to canvas, as Rudolf Bauer did, creating interrelated spatial forms, a flow and rhythm. Bauer understood how the delicate selection of the proper three notes on a piano keyboard creates a chord and that the combination of those chords creates a symphony, so the colors and composition of simple geometric forms create a canvas" (Leonard Hutton-Hutschnecker, Rudolf Bauer, The Constructivist Years (exhibition catalogue), Leonard Hutton Galleries, New York, 1976, p. 4).
