Condition

This marvelous painting has not been properly restored recently. The restorations that have been done are quite heavy handed and visible to the naked eye. However, beneath the varnish and restorations, the paint layer in most areas, where it is not damaged, seems to be in fresh condition. The losses seem to be isolated, even though they are numerous. There are visible blanched restorations in the sky in the blue on the right, in the lower center in the clouds, and in the pale blue on the left. In the landscape, there are similar discolored restorations, but they are less numerous. One is in the sunlit middle distance in the center and another in the foliage in the lower center. There is also a restoration on top of the rocks on the left side, running about 8 inches towards the left edge. There is no question that there have been losses in the past. The painting is lined with a rather unconventional Mylar and wax lining. The work will never potentially become as complex or as brilliant as it was, unless the lining is reversed and the retouches completely reexamined. These existing restorations are over enthusiastic and are probably hiding a good deal of original paint. A full reexamination of the restoration of the painting is recommended. On the other hand, the visible restorations could be adjusted, which would probably make the painting presentable.
