Condition
This painting is in beautiful condition. It is slightly different than many pictures by Matta. It is painted
on heavy burlap and is very muscular in its techniques and materials. The artist appears to have used sand or some other gritty material on top of a heavily applied layer of oil paint. The paint layer is very dry, as it should be. There are some scratches and scrapes, such as one that runs diagonally through the complex structure in the center left, that seem to be original. There is a square inch of paint missing in the center of the brown circle in the center right, which also seems to be original. The only damage that may have occurred seems to be a horizontal scrape in the canvas about three inches long in the lower right, two inches from the bottom edge. In the lower center there is a small circular loss in the pink color that also may not be original. Matta defies traditional techniques in this work, and the only possible paint loss is limited to this scrape and loss in the lower center.
