Property from the Estate of Elizabeth Green Romano

Sotheby’s is honored to offer Fernando Botero’s The River, from The Estate of Elizabeth Green Romano. A graduate of Andrews High School and Meredith College, Elizabeth “Libby” Green Romano led a remarkable life as a teacher, principal, entrepreneur, restaurateur, investor and innovator. Known as a great humanitarian and for her compassion and generosity, Libby had a revered track record of giving back to the community and was instrumental in founding the N.E. and Ruby Green Hospice House in Georgetown, South Carolina. Since opening in February 2007, the Hospice House has helped close to 1,000 patients and their families with pain and symptom management, respite care, and end of life care. Libby also played a major role in the history of medical science, when in 1983 she and then husband Philip J. Romano (the celebrated founder of Fuddruckers and Romano&rsqu📖o;s Macaroni Grill) provided angel funding to a young Argentinian doctor named Julio Palmaz. Palmaz was working on a design for a cardiac stent to prop open clogged arteries, but had thus far received a lukewarm response from the medical community and would have stalled development without the Romano investment. The life-saving design, known today as the Palmaz-Schatz Stent, was later purchased by Johnson & Johnson. It is now recognized as one of “Ten Patents that Changed the World” and  approximately 1 million are imp🌌lanted across the world every year, saving countless lives.

Libby Romano’s collection offers a remarkably diverse survey of late 19th and 20th century art characterized by unwavering quality and a special affinity for the female portrait. Selections from her collection offered in our November 7th Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale include evocative, surreal paintings by Giacometti, de Chirico and Magritte as well as delicate portraits by Renoir, Bonnard and Maillol. Important works by Modern Masters such as Motherwell, Frankenthaler, de Kooning and Gorky will be presented in our Contemporary Art Day Sale of November 14th and a stunning pastel by Cassat will highlight our American Art Sale on November 29th.
