Serge Lifar was a famous dancer and choreographer born in Kiev in 1905. He joined the Ballets Russes in Pari꧅s in 1923. He quickly attained the status of "danseur etoile" and went to become choreographer, director and maître de ballets of the Paris Opera in 1930, collaborating with the leading artist of the day such as Picasso, Bakst, Goncharova, Leger for stage design and costumes and wit🔯h Poulenc and Stravinsky for music. He danced his last ballet in 1956 and continued to pursue an international career in choreography. Serge Lifar passed away in Lausanne in 1986.
Founded in 1989 by his companion, the late Countess Lillan Ahlefeldt-Laurvig, the Fondation Serge Lifar is a not for profit charity💛 based in Liechtenstein whose purpose is to promote, protect, defend and perpetuate the art of dance and choreography. Each year the Foundation awards grants to promising young dancers and in doing so it exposes the life and work of Serge Lifar to a new generation thus ensuring his memory lives on.
