Description

  • gold, carnelian
Suspending 21 carved carnelian scarabs, the reverses of each are engraved in the a globolo style featuring figures and scenes from ancient Greek and Etruscan mythology, each scarab framed within wire and beadwork surrounds, spaced by twisted wire rondelles, completed by a carved carnelian intaglio clasp and supported on a gold loop-on-loop chain, length 15 inches.

Condition

In good condition overall with gentle surface wear; minor denting to the underside of the clasp. The semi-translucent carved carnelian scarabs range from medium-deep orange to deep reddish orange and orangy brown, with some examples of surface scratching, chipping and discoloration near the drill holes. The white patches seen on one of the carved scarabs is a phenomenon that most likely occured during antiquity, resulting from the carnelian being placed under extreme heat. Bearing a nice weight.

Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
