Description

  • gold, carnelian
The articulated bracelet set with seven carved carnelian scarabs, the reverse of each engraved in the a globolo style featuring figures and scenes from ancient Greek and Etruscan mythology, each scarab held within wirework and filigree bezels, spaced by batons accented by gold wire, length 7 inches.

Condition

In good condition with overall surface wear, areas of minor discoloration, light denting to the terminals of some of the batons, and some evidence of solder on two of the links (not apparent when worn). The 7 translucent to semi-translucent carved carnelian scarabs are medium-light to medium-deep orangy brown with lighter and darker spot towards the base of the stones. One scarab with a white patch due to the carnelian's being exposed to extreme heat during the manufacturing process. Total gross weight approximately 58 dwts. The clasp is opened by pulling out the finial-style terminal (with an small knot on one end) on one of the baton-shaped links. Although the bracelet donated to the Victoria & Albert museum mentioned in the catalogue note is unsigned, the owner stated that it had been purchased from Castellani.
