Condition

The surface of the work is in poor condition. There is a vertical break in the panel down the right side. There is massive pigment seperation throughout the entire painting. There is paint loss down the right edge. Thre is a residue on the top and bottom edges. Under UV: evidence of inpainting, covered by a very heavy masking varnish.

Catalogue Note

This picture repeats a signed and dated composition in the collection of the Duke of Bedford located at Woburn Abbey. Though listed as autograph by Gerson, (see Gerson, Rembrandt Paintings, New York, 1968, p. 527) the Woburn Abbey picture has been disputed in various pieces of literature throughout the twentieth century (see Cantini, Rembrandt, Firenze, 1992, p. 326, no. 214).
